To work out your niche is critical to being able to attract the right type of readers to your blog or business.
When you are attracting the right type of readers, you are ultimately attracting future customers as well.
This blog post works through what is a niche, why you need a niche and how to work out your niche.
You will need to come up with a niche for your business.
A niche market is a small group of a larger market with its own particular needs or preferences, which may be different from the larger market.
In other words, it is a specific group of people with specific needs, wants and ideas.
Let’s use the example of fashion. You have fashion for kids, men and women.
In women’s fashion, you then have tops, pants, dresses, skirts, jackets, shoes and so on.
You can then break that down either further to look at different seasons, or different types of women’s dresses in a particular season.
For example, in summer you would have short dresses, long dresses, strappy dresses, strapless dresses, dress colour, dress material etc.
Nearly every market can be further refined, or divided, by the particular needs and preferences of people.
Some of the most common ways to define a niche are based on:
1 – Price – expensive, mid range or discount.
2 – Characteristics such as gender, age, relationship status, income or education.
3 – Level of quality – high end at one end of the spectrum, and cheap and cheerful at the other end of the spectrum.
4 – Things such as beliefs, attitudes, morals and values
5 – Where people are physically located
Marketing to a particular niche is much easier than appealing to a broad market.
A niche has much more in common in terms of needs, wants, or preferences, and you can tailor your products to meet the needs of that particular group.
To work out your niche, you need to profile what your ideal customer looks like.
You need to be able to describe all of the characteristics discussed above.
Once you have defined that, you can then think about the following questions:-
1 – Do you have any currents skills that you can convert into an online business?
2 – Do the research. Is this niche profitable?
3 – Are people making money in this area?
By spending the time to work out your niche, and then spend some time thinking about how you can help them, you are setting yourself up for success by being able to attract the right people to your website.
Once they have visited your website, you can get them to fall in love with you and end up becoming loyal, raving fans and more importantly, customers.
