There are many things you can do in Google Docs. Working in a corporate environment for many years, Microsoft Office was my go-to.
However, as I started to build and grow my business, I have uncovered the wonders of Google Docs.
In this post, I will talk about some of the awesome features of Google Docs.
Google Docs is a free word processing platform that you can access from anywhere.
If you have a Gmail account, a YouTube account, use Google Calendar, Google Voice or Google Drive – then you will be able to access Google Docs.
There are three ways to access Google Docs:-
Google Docs comes with a great set of free templates that you can utilise to start your document.
When you enter into Google Docs and click on NEW – it will give you the option of starting a blank page or using one of the templates available.
There are hundreds of templates available, with the most popular being at the top. Templates include resumes, reports, lesson plans, newsletters, brochures, meeting minutes and so on.
Like other word processing systems, there are a number of things that you can change when it comes to the page set up.
To find the page set up, click on FILE and you will find PAGE SET UP towards the bottom of the list.
In here, you can choose whether you want your document to be portrait or landscape, choose the paper size, background colour of the document and also amend all the margins.
This is one thing that I love about Google Docs.
With other platforms, you sometimes need to purchase additional software in order to create a PDF. Google Docs has the functionality built into it to download your document as a PDF.
Click on FILE, then about halfway down the list is the option DOWNLOAD AS, with an arrow, from this you can select PDF document as an option.
Google Docs already comes with a heap of free fonts however, it also has additional fonts available in case what is listed in their default list isn’t what you are looking for.
To view the list of fonts available, click on the current font listed in the tool bar.
A list of all the default fonts will appear, as well as an option MORE FONTS.
Click on this and this will open a new window with a collection of other fonts that you can add into your document.
Other one of things you can do in Google Docs is translate your document into a different language.
Once you have completed your document, you can click on FILE and then LANGUAGE and a number of different options for translation will appear.
You will need to create a new title for your document.
I recommend just adding the language version to the title to make it easy to find.
For example if your document is called “7 things you can do with Google Docs”, then I would name the new document “7 things you can do with Google Docs – Italian version”.
Google Docs does not have the click SAVE option like other word processing platforms. It continuously saves you document as you go along.
To access previous versions, you will need to click on ALL CHANGES SAVED IN DRIVE, which you will find located at the top of the menu.
You can then view all the versions by date and time and rename the versions if required.
There are hundreds of other features that you can include in your Google Docs to make using the platform easier.
To access add-ons, click ADD ONS located at the top of the document.
A new window will appear with all of the add-ons available. Most of these are free.
Some of the cool add-ons that are most popular include:-
These are just a small sample of things that you can do in Google Docs.
I would love to hear what amazing things you have uncovered in this platform.
